Sensors Are the Key to Intrusion Detection
Door Sensors
When your objective is to keep criminals outside of your home or office, you can't go wrong with door sensors. You will place one sensor on the top of your door and the other on your wall, and you will be off to a good start. Since the sensors are next to each other when the door is closed, opening the door separates them and triggers the alarm. Before you move forward, pay attention to the type of sensor a door monitor uses.
In some cases, the sensor consists of a magnetic field and a simple circuit, and opening the door will disrupt it. Other systems rely on infrared sensors to determine whether a door is opened or closed, and paying attention to the benefits and downsides of each choice is a smart move that you won't want to overlook.
Window Sensors
Some people will install a security system and forget to protect their windows, and this oversight can lead to unneeded problems in the future. Because criminals won't hesitate to climb through a window, you will need a complete system that offers full protection. If you want to take every possible step to minimize the risk, you will even need to install window sensors on the upper levels of your home.
Some window sensors work the same as door sensors, but a crafty criminal won't have any issues with breaking the glass to gain access. Although this situation can make you feel hopeless, you can combat that problem and add an extra layer of security. Shatter detectors that attach to the insides of your windows will trigger the alarm if a criminal tries to break the glass.
Motion Sensors
No matter how secure your doors and windows are, no intrusion detection system is complete without motion detectors. They can detect when someone is moving in the area and act as a backup if someone gets past your external sensors. The way that a motion detector will work depends on the type that you get, and many of them use microwaves to get a picture of the room and the objects inside of it. When an intruder comes into the area, the microwave's pattern gets disrupted and triggers the alarm. Some systems use infrared sensors that will detect a criminal’s body heat and notify you of the danger.
If you don't want to miss anything, it's critical you put a lot of thought into the placement of your motion detectors. Hallways and living rooms are perfect for motion sensors, but you don't want to forget about securing your garage. If you reach out to a team of experts, they will gladly provide you with the needed advice to keep your property and family safe.
Cameras
The best sensors that technology has to offer won't do you any good if the intruder leaves the area before you can respond. If you want to take your intrusion detection effort to the next level, use a few cameras. Criminals have been known to find and destroy video evidence before making their escape, but using a system that saves your footage to an off-site location will keep the odds in your favor. You can connect some cameras to your internet connection to see what is happening in your home or office from your smartphone or computer.
Keypads
No matter what path you choose, every security system comes with a keypad that will allow you to control the sensors. The keypad is how you will arm and disarm your security system, and different panels have distinct features. If you want to use the system while you are home, you can activate the door and window monitors, leaving your motion sensors deactivated. When you leave your home or office, you will want to activate the entire system, and you will have a few seconds to exit without triggering the alarm. When you return, you will have several seconds to disarm your system to prevent the alarm from sounding.
When you install your security system for the first time, you will need to choose a code to arm it and to control the features. To keep things simple, people often opt for codes that are easy to remember, such as important dates. Criminals will often put a lot of thought into their burglaries, and it won't be hard for them to guess easy passcodes. Use a code that not even your closest friend would be able to guess, and you will be able to sleep at night.
